Toshiba Expands Motor Control with Cortex-M4 Microcontrollers

Toshiba TXZ+ Cortex-M4 Microcontrollers

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) has launched eight new products within the M4K Group of the TXZ+ Family Advanced Class 32-bit microcontrollers, featuring Arm Cortex-M4 core with FPU. These microcontrollers offer 512KB/1MB flash memory capacity, catering to the increasing demand for larger program capacity and firmware over-the-air support in motor applications supporting IoT.

The newly released products expand the code flash memory capacity to 512KB/1MB and RAM capacity to 64KB, providing enhanced functionality for AC motors, brushless DC motors, and inverter controls. With an Arm Cortex-M4 core running up to 160MHz, integrated code flash, and 32KB data flash memory with 100K program/erase cycle endurance, these microcontrollers ensure robust performance.

Additionally, the microcontrollers feature various interfaces and motor control options, including advanced-programmable motor driver (A-PMD), advanced encoder 32-bit (A-ENC32), and advanced vector engine plus (A-VE+). They also incorporate three units of high-speed, high-resolution 12-bit analog/digital converters, contributing to wider application of IoT and enabling advanced functionality in motor control applications.

One notable feature of the new products is the implementation of 1MB code flash memory in two separate 512KB areas, allowing for firmware rotation with the memory swap method. This enables instructions to be read from one area while updated code is programmed into the other area in parallel, ensuring seamless operation.

Moreover, the microcontrollers come equipped with UART, TSPI, and I2C interfaces for general communications, along with self-diagnosis functions for flash memory, RAM, ADC, and Clock, facilitating IEC 60730 Class B functional safety certification.

Toshiba provides comprehensive documentation, sample software, and driver software for each peripheral interface, along with evaluation boards and development environments in collaboration with Arm® global ecosystem partners. Additionally, Toshiba plans to expand the flash memory capacity for M4M Group with CAN interface, further enhancing its product offerings in the microcontroller market.
