Silicon Mitus, Pico Semiconductor Develop High-Frequency Silicon Capacitors

Silicon Mitus, a leading power management and analog semiconductor company, has partnered with Pico Semiconductor, Inc., a capacitor development firm, to develop ultra-small silicon capacitors for high-frequency applications. The collaboration resulted in the creation of capacitors with exceptional high-frequency characteristics and low resistance, making them suitable for System-on-Chip (SoC) packaging modules.

 

Capacitors, essential electrical components storing charge for steady current flow in electronic devices, are crucial in various applications. Silicon Mitus’s innovative capacitors, a result of their joint effort with Pico Semiconductor, allow the replacement of multiple multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) with one or two ultra-small silicon capacitors. This breakthrough expands their utility beyond small electronic products, reaching into IoT and high-frequency communications applications.

 

Silicon Mitus’s achievement in developing ultra-thin, high-capacity capacitors positions the company as a pioneer in the field. With a global silicon-based capacitor market valued at approximately KRW 2 trillion (USD 1.48 billion) and an annual growth rate of 6% to 8%, the collaboration is strategically timed to tap into this high-potential market.

 

The success of this collaboration underscores the challenges involved in silicon-based capacitors, which are sensitive to material and structural dynamics. Silicon Mitus’s focus on developing materials and processes meeting the necessary performance standards has led to the successful commercialization of these ultra-small high-frequency silicon capacitors, marking a significant advancement in the semiconductor industry.
