Penang Lands RM6 Billion Semiconductor Giant SPIL

Siliconware Precision Industries Co., Ltd. (SPIL), a leading global semiconductor packaging and testing company, celebrated a major milestone today with the groundbreaking ceremony of its new Malaysia P1 plant at Bandar Cassia Technology Park, Pulau Pinang. This state-of-the-art 8-hectare facility represents a significant investment of RM6 billion and is expected to create nearly 3,000 skilled jobs over the next 15 years.

 

The new plant will introduce advanced packaging and testing technologies, including wafer bumping, wafer-level chip packaging, flip chip packaging, and testing. These advancements are projected to significantly reduce production cycles, enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.

 

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by prominent figures including YBhg. Dato’ Hairil Yahri Yaacob, Secretary General of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI); Mr. Sivasuriyamoorthy Sundara Raja, Deputy CEO of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA); Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, CEO of InvestPenang; and Mr. Michael Chang, CEO of SPIL Malaysia.

 

YB Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of MITI, highlighted the importance of this investment, stating, “The groundbreaking of this RM6-billion investment by SPIL validates Malaysia as a preferred destination for global semiconductor companies. The National Semiconductor Strategic Task Force (NSSTF) has been pivotal in attracting and implementing such investments, which are key to the success of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.”

 

Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of MIDA, emphasized the benefits of SPIL’s investment, noting its potential to enhance Malaysia’s semiconductor supply chain and create high-value job opportunities. Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, representing Penang’s Chief Minister, praised Penang’s role in the semiconductor sector, expressing optimism about the benefits SPIL will gain from its new facility in Penang, dubbed the “Silicon Valley of the East.”

 

Michael Chang, CEO of SPIL Malaysia, expressed gratitude for the support from MIDA and InvestPenang, and highlighted the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. SPIL aims to achieve Green Building Initiative (GBI) Green Globes Certification and a 2050 net-zero carbon reduction goal.

 

As part of ASE Technology Holding, the world’s largest packaging and testing group, SPIL’s new facility in Penang marks a significant step in its global expansion, introducing advanced packaging technologies and strengthening the industry.
