Micron Technology introduces compact 9×13 mm UFS 4.0 mobile solution, featuring breakthrough firmware, 232-layer 3D NAND, and up to 1TB capacity.
Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) unveiled its latest advancement in mobile storage at the Mobile World Congress, delivering qualification samples of an enhanced version of its Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0. The compact 9×13 mm package, built on advanced 232-layer 3D NAND, provides up to 1TB capacity and offers best-in-class performance for flagship smartphones.
Micron’s UFS 4.0 boasts up to 4300 MBps sequential read and 4000 MBps sequential write speeds, twice the performance of previous generations. This enables quicker launches of productivity, creativity, and emerging AI applications. Large language models in generative AI applications can load 40% faster, ensuring smoother experiences when interacting with AI digital companions.
Mark Montierth, General Manager of Micron’s Mobile Business Unit, stated, “Micron’s latest UFS 4.0 solution enables world-class storage performance and reduced power in the world’s smallest UFS package.” The breakthrough firmware advancements enhance smartphones’ efficiency, flexibility, and scalability, accelerating the adoption of generative AI-capable smartphones.
The compact design not only sets the stage for ultra-slim smartphones but also enables larger batteries with a 25% increase in power efficiency. Micron’s proprietary firmware innovations, including High-Performance Mode, One Button Refresh, and Zoned UFS, contribute to improved storage access, device performance, and extended smartphone lifespan.
Micron is already shipping samples of the upgraded UFS 4.0 in capacities of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. These capacities not only accommodate on-device AI assistants’ data but also ensure secure storage for users’ growing photo libraries, providing always-on access to personal data and powerful AI features, even offline or in areas with poor connectivity.
This development positions Micron at the forefront of mobile flash storage innovation, reflecting the company’s commitment to anticipating emerging use cases, collaborating with customers, and addressing critical pain points in the evolving smartphone landscape.
