Intel announces that its highly anticipated Lunar Lake processors will debut in Q3 2024, arriving just in time for the holiday season. These processors are slated to power over 80 new laptop designs from more than 20 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), delivering advanced AI performance at a global scale for Copilot+ PCs. Future updates will enable Lunar Lake to support Copilot+ features, such as Recall.

Following the success of Intel Core Ultra processors, Lunar Lake is expected to facilitate the shipment of over 40 million AI PC processors this year. Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel’s executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group, highlighted that Lunar Lake will offer breakthrough power efficiency, trusted x86 architecture compatibility, and extensive software support across CPU, GPU, and NPU, marking Intel’s most competitive hardware and software offering to date. “With breakthrough power efficiency, the trusted compatibility of x86 architecture, and the industry’s deepest catalog of software enablement across the CPU, GPU, and NPU, we will deliver the most competitive joint client hardware and software offering in our history with Lunar Lake and Copilot+,” said Holthaus.

An AI PC, which integrates a CPU, GPU, and NPU, accelerates AI and machine learning tasks on the device itself. This capability is increasingly crucial for automating, streamlining, and optimizing PC tasks. Lunar Lake promises to deliver three times the AI performance of its predecessors, featuring more than 40 NPU tera operations per second (TOPS) and over 60 GPU TOPS, amounting to more than 100 platform TOPS.

Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows + Devices at Microsoft, noted significant enhancements in security, battery life, and other areas due to Intel’s deep co-engineering partnership with Microsoft. “The launch of Lunar Lake will bring meaningful fundamental improvements across security, battery life, and more thanks to our deep co-engineering partnership with Intel. We are excited to see Lunar Lake come to market with a 40+ TOPS NPU which will deliver Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences at scale when available,” said Davuluri.

As part of the AI PC Acceleration Program, Intel collaborates with over 100 independent software vendors to enhance AI PC experiences across various applications, including personal assistants, audio effects, content creation, gaming, security, streaming, and video collaboration.
