Renesas Electronics Corporation, a renowned supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, has announced the integration of Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code) with its entire lineup of microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs). The company has introduced tool extensions for all its embedded processors on the Microsoft VS Code website, offering designers the flexibility to work in their preferred environment. VS Code is a popular Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and code editor that simplifies and accelerates code editing across various platforms and operating systems. By adding support for VS Code, Renesas aims to empower a broader community of designers to create efficient embedded solutions using their devices, in addition to the existing powerful e2 studio IDE used by thousands of designers worldwide.

With the integration of Visual Studio Code, Renesas customers can now develop and debug embedded software for a wide range of products, including the 16-bit RL78 and 32-bit RA, RX, and RH850 MCUs, as well as the 64-bit RZ MPUs and R-Car family SoCs. These embedded processors cater to diverse applications such as automotive, IoT, industrial automation, home appliances, healthcare, and more.

Akiya Fukui, Vice President and Head of the Software Development Division at Renesas, emphasized that this move enables an even larger group of designers to work with Renesas embedded processors, given their extensive and loyal customer base. Marc Goodner, Principal Product Manager at Microsoft, welcomed Renesas to the Visual Studio Code community and acknowledged the accessibility of the broad line of MCUs and MPUs from Renesas to the millions of developers using VS Code.

The availability of VS Code is free of charge, including access to the source code. Users can utilize the Github pull request extension to make a source repository and then review and edit source code using VS Code. The platform also offers evolving extension features with a simple user interface and flexible command interfaces, enhancing the overall development experience for Renesas customers.
