Pickering Electronics, a manufacturer of high-performance reed relays, has introduced Series 144 high-power reed relays. This new series is designed to meet the increasing demand for compact yet powerful switching solutions across various industries.
The Series 144 reed relays stand out with an impressive 80 Watts power rating, making them one of the highest-power reed relays available on the market. Despite their high power capability, these relays maintain a compact form factor, stacking on a mere 0.25-inch pitch. This compact design enables efficient use of space, especially in applications where size is a constraint.
With a switching current of up to 2 Amps and a continuous carry current of up to 3 Amps, the Series 144 relays offer robust performance for a wide range of applications. Additionally, these relays boast high-voltage capability, with a switching voltage of up to 1000VDC for 10 Watts and up to 3kV stand-off, ensuring reliable operation even in demanding environments.
Kevin Mallett, Technical Specialist at Pickering Electronics, highlighted the environmental benefits of the Series 144 relays. “With its impressive high-power rating, Series 144 provides a greener alternative to mercury wetted reed relays,” said Mallett. “While dry reeds may not provide bounce-free operation, their more eco-friendly construction helps contribute to sustainable practices.”
In addition to their environmental advantages, Series 144 relays offer superior performance compared to electromechanical relays (EMRs) in many applications. Mallett explained, “Series 144 is also a viable substitute for miniature EMRs. Its low-level performance and superior isolation significantly improve efficiency and reliability for many applications.”
The Series 144 relays are available in 1 Form A, 2 Form A, and 1 Form B configurations, with coil voltages of 5 V, 12 V, or 24 V. Optional internal diode protection is also offered for added flexibility. Furthermore, Pickering Electronics provides custom build options upon request, including various pin configurations to meet specific application requirements.
One of the key advantages of reed relays over EMRs is their superior reliability and longevity. Featuring vacuumed reed switches sealed within a glass tube, reed relays offer enhanced protection against environmental factors such as dust, moisture, and contaminants. This design ensures consistent performance over an extended operational life, making them ideal for applications where durability is paramount.
