Microchip Simplifies 800G AEC Development with META-DX2C Retimer

Microchip 800G AECs

In response to the escalating demand for high-speed connections fueled by generative AI and AI/ML technologies, Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) has introduced an accelerated development path for 800G Active Electrical Cables (AECs). These cables play a crucial role in backend data center networks and applications where 800G connectivity is imperative. The challenge lies in overcoming design and development hurdles faced by cable vendors, which Microchip aims to tackle with its META-DX2C 800G retimer.

The META-DX2C retimer, equipped with high-performance, long-reach 112G SerDes capable of supporting up to 40 dB reach, enables the design of thinner and longer AECs essential for dense hyperscaler infrastructure buildouts. Microchip offers a complete solution for 800G AEC product development, including a hardware reference design and Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) software package. This comprehensive offering minimizes the resources needed for cable manufacturers and simplifies the supply-chain management process.

Maher Fahmi, Vice President for Microchip’s communications business unit, emphasized the significance of their latest solution: “The META-DX2C retimer enables AEC connections for the high-density networks that are needed for generative AI applications.”

Microchip’s META-DX2C retimer not only addresses challenges in generative AI networks but also resolves connectivity issues in high-capacity data center switches and routers. Its compact design and high bandwidth make it an optimal solution for hyperscalers seeking low-power, low-cost, and high-bandwidth connectivity options.

Alan Weckel, Co-founder and Analyst at market research firm 650 Group, acknowledged the industry shift towards active electrical cables, stating, “Microchip’s META-DX2C 800G AEC retimer is aligned with this trend and is the type of solution needed to enable growth in this area.”

Microchip’s META-DX2C 800G AEC solution comes with a paddle card reference design, incorporating the META-DX2C retimer, PIC32 microcontroller, oscillators, buck regulator, and linear voltage regulator – all supplied by Microchip. This integration simplifies supply chain management for customers. The solution supports the CMIS 5.2 specification, offering a comprehensive package for cable manufacturers.
