Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has announced the launch of its latest offering, the PIC32CK 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), aimed at meeting the heightened cybersecurity demands set by new legislation effective in 2024.
The new PIC32CK MCUs come equipped with an integrated Hardware Security Module (HSM) subsystem and Arm Cortex-M33 core featuring TrustZone technology. These features are designed to help developers create applications that comply with the upcoming cybersecurity requirements efficiently.
With the impending regulations imposing stricter cybersecurity standards on various industries, from consumer IoT devices to critical infrastructure, Microchip’s latest innovation aims to simplify the process of meeting these mandates. The inclusion of an HSM subsystem provides a high level of security for essential functions such as authentication, secure boot, and updates. Additionally, TrustZone technology adds an extra layer of protection for crucial software functions.
The PIC32CK SG stands out as the first 32-bit device on the market to combine the robust security of an HSM with TrustZone technology, making it a cost-effective solution for mid-range MCU applications.
Rod Drake, corporate vice president of Microchip’s MCU32 and MPU32 business units, highlighted the significance of security in IoT connected devices, stating, “Emerging requirements make security mandatory for the majority of IoT connected devices. The PIC32CK makes it cost-effective to provide hardware-based security to mid-range microcontroller applications.”
In addition to its security features, the PIC32CK MCU family is designed to support ISO 26262 functional safety and ISO/SAE 21434 cybersecurity standards. It offers a range of options to adjust security levels, memory, and connectivity bandwidth based on specific application requirements.
For industries requiring additional security and safety measures, such as industrial designs, medical devices, and consumer IoT devices, Microchip provides support through its Trust Platform Design Suite. This platform enables secure factory provisioning of keys, certificates, and IP without exposing sensitive information within the supply chain.
To assist developers in utilizing the capabilities of these microcontrollers, Microchip offers comprehensive development tools, including MPLAB Harmony v3 and Trust Platform Design Suite. The PIC32CK family is also supported by the PIC32CK SG and PIC32CK GC Curiosity Ultra Development Boards.
