Microchip Introduces Next-Gen Security with PIC18-Q24 MCU

PIC18-Q24 MCU

In response to the burgeoning interconnectivity of everyday devices with the cloud, Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has unveiled the PIC18-Q24 Family of Microcontrollers (MCUs), setting a new benchmark for enhanced code security at the chip level.

The imperative for robust security measures within embedded systems has grown significantly alongside the proliferation of connected devices, spanning from smartphones and automobiles to smart home appliances. Addressing this critical need, the PIC18-Q24 MCUs integrate the Programming and Debugging Interface Disable (PDID) feature, a pioneering security measure to fortify firmware and data protection.

By enabling PDID, these MCUs fortify defenses against malicious reprogramming attempts by locking out access to the programming/debugging interface. Unauthorized endeavors to read, modify, or erase firmware are effectively thwarted by this enhanced code protection feature.

Greg Robinson, Corporate Vice President of Microchip’s 8-bit MCU business unit, emphasized the significance of fortified security measures within programmable components. Robinson highlighted the necessity of implementing enhanced protection features to avert potential breaches, positioning the PIC18-Q24 family of MCUs as a foundational defense mechanism against evolving threats.

Recognizing the complexity of secure systems interfacing with diverse sensors, memory chips, and processors, the PIC18-Q24 MCUs introduce Multi-Voltage I/O (MVIO). This feature negates the necessity for external level shifters, enabling seamless interfacing with digital inputs or outputs across varying operating voltages. Not only does MVIO streamline board complexity and reduce Bill of Material (BOM) costs, but it also positions the PIC18-Q24 MCUs as efficient system management processors, adept at monitoring and telemetry functions crucial in safeguarding embedded systems against potential breaches.

Moreover, the PIC18-Q24 family integrates an option for an immutable bootloader, offering a secure pathway for firmware upgrades in applications that demand heightened security measures.

For developers, Microchip ensures comprehensive support for PIC18-Q24 MCUs within its development ecosystem, seamlessly integrating with MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC). The PIC18F56Q24 Curiosity Nano Evaluation Kit (EV01E86A) provides complete support for the PIC18-Q24 family, fostering a streamlined embedded development experience and expediting time-to-market.
