Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has announced an expansion of its Serial SRAM product line to address the increasing need for larger capacities and faster speeds in memory solutions. The move is a strategic response to the evolving demands of customers seeking more robust memory options.

The expanded portfolio introduces Serial SRAM devices with capacities of up to 4 Mb and increased Serial Peripheral Interface/Serial Quad I/O Interface (SPI/SQI) speeds of up to 143 MHz. These enhancements aim to better serve industries reliant on powerful memory solutions.

Microchip’s latest offerings provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional parallel SRAM products. With a lower-cost 8-pin package and high-speed SPI/SQI communication bus, these devices reduce costs and minimize board footprint, enhancing overall efficiency.

Jeff Leasure, Director of Microchip’s memory products business unit, noted, “Serial SRAM is a popular solution for engineers seeking more RAM than what is available on board their MCU but aiming to reduce cost and overall board size.”

The 2 Mb and 4 Mb serial SRAM devices boast increased bus speed capability, reaching 143 MHz with optional quad SPI. This improvement helps narrow the speed gap between parallel and serial memory solutions, positioning Microchip Technology as a leader in memory innovation.

Furthermore, the expanded portfolio addresses concerns associated with serial memory, such as limited capacity and slower speeds. With features like unlimited endurance and zero write times, these small-form-factor, low-power devices offer exceptional performance across various applications, including data transfer, buffering, logging, metering, and other data-intensive functions.

The availability of the 2 Mb and 4 Mb serial SRAM devices, starting at $1.60 each in 10,000-unit quantities, presents an attractive option for businesses seeking cost-effective yet high-performance memory solutions.
