Keysight Expands FieldFox Frequency Range, Introduces Portable Millimeter-wave Analysis

Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) expands the frequency range of its FieldFox handheld signal analyzers. This will offer nearly 170 GHz support for millimeter-wave (mmWave) signal analysis. Through a collaboration with Virginia Diodes Inc. (VDI), Keysight’s A- and B-Series FieldFox handheld analyzers with 18 GHz or higher, can be paired with VDI PSAX frequency extenders to cover sub-THz frequency range.

As demand for mmWave measurements surges to support advances in 5G, 6G, aerospace, defense, and automotive radar, field-based engineers face the challenge of accurately analyzing these highly sensitive signals. mmWave signals are particularly vulnerable to obstacles, weather conditions, and interference, making precise measurements essential for designing reliable networks and radar systems that offer improved coverage and performance.

Traditional testing tools like desktop signal analyzers and generators, however, are often too bulky and expensive for convenient field use. Addressing this need, Keysight has introduced its FieldFox solution, designed to provide precise mmWave measurements in a portable format. Paired with Virginia Diodes, Inc. (VDI)’s PSAX frequency extender modules, the FieldFox offers a highly capable field measurement tool that reaches frequencies up to 170 GHz. Engineers can also equip FieldFox with Option 357, a downloadable pulse generator, which when combined with VDI’s PSGX module, enables seamless mmWave signal generation up to 170 GHz.

Keysight FieldFox with VDI extenders brings several notable benefits for field engineers. First, it extends frequency coverage from 18 GHz up to 170 GHz, supporting a range of critical applications in signal analysis and generation. It also delivers optimized performance in the mmWave spectrum, with exceptional sensitivity at -155 dBm/Hz, accessible through various analyzer modes such as spectrum, IQ, or real-time spectrum analysis. The cost-efficiency of this setup stands out, as FieldFox with VDI extenders offers significant savings, cutting costs by at least half compared to traditional mmWave solutions.

Weighing less than 4 kg, the FieldFox and VDI extender combination is lightweight, making it suitable for both field and lab testing. This portability simplifies mmWave testing, empowering engineers to conduct precise measurements easily and efficiently, whether they’re in the field or working in controlled environments.

Dr. Thomas W. Crowe, CEO of VDI, said, “VDI manufactures state-of-the-art test and measurement equipment for mmWave and THz applications, including vector network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, and signal generator extension modules. These products enhance the capabilities of high-performance microwave measurement tools by extending them to higher frequencies. Through our collaboration with Keysight, VDI is excited to provide frequency extenders for the FieldFox handheld analyzers, offering customers lightweight solutions for both signal analysis and generation in the mmWave range, with exceptional signal quality and measurement integrity.”

Vince Nguyen, Vice President and General Manager, of the Aerospace, Defense, and Government Solution Group at Keysight, said, “The aerospace, defense, and commercial sectors lack a portable solution that can provide accurate mmWave measurements. As customers explore innovations they need access to higher frequencies in the radio spectrum, including mmWave. Working with VDI, we’ve developed a solution that is easy to test signal analysis and generation in the field as well as in the laboratory.”
