Diodes Introduces High-Performance LDO Voltage Regulator for Noise-Sensitive Applications

Diodes Incorporated Building logo

Diodes Incorporated (Nasdaq: DIOD) has launched a 3A-rated low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator, the AP7179D, engineered to meet the stringent demands of noise-sensitive power conversion applications. The new offering provides a reliable and stable power supply, making it particularly suitable for applications in high-speed communications, test and measurement, medical, and video sectors, where precision and low noise are paramount.

The AP7179D stands out with its remarkable 4.4µVRMS operation at a 0.8V output, ensuring a clean and stable power source. Designed to power noise-sensitive components like high-performance SerDes, RF components, and data converters, it finds utility in a range of hardware, including remote radio units (RRUs), outdoor backhaul units, mMIMO active antenna systems, ultrasound scanners, radar systems, and lab/field instrumentation.

Notably, the AP7179D boasts an impressive ±1% output accuracy across line, load, and temperature variations, guaranteeing consistent performance. With a maximum dropout voltage of 180mV at a 3A load current, it accommodates a wide voltage conversion range. Its low-noise reference and error amplifier contribute to a minimal noise floor, making it suitable for applications where noise interference can be detrimental. Furthermore, the device’s 40dB power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) at 500kHz significantly reduces input supply noise coupling to the output.

This LDO voltage regulator offers two output voltage selection modes: it can be pin-programmed between 0.8V and 3.95V or adjusted using an external resistor divider from 0.8V to 5.5V. This versatility simplifies the design process and minimizes the number of additional components required.

The AP7179D’s low output noise not only suppresses power-supply-generated phase noise but also mitigates clock jitter. This feature, combined with its high-current capabilities, makes it compatible with high-performance processors like FPGAs, ASICs, and DSPs.

In terms of packaging, the AP7179D is housed in a compact 20-pin W-QFN3535 (Type A1) package, offering space-saving advantages for designers. Moreover, it comes at an attractive price point, available at $0.70 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.

Diodes Incorporated’s AP7179D LDO voltage regulator represents a significant advancement in power management solutions, providing engineers with a dependable tool to address the stringent noise requirements of modern, high-performance electronic systems.
