New Patent Puts Nortech at Forefront of Fiber Optics

Nortech Systems has been granted a new patent for its non-magnetic expanded beam fiber optic cable technology, marking a key development in hybrid connectivity solutions that combine optical and electrical signal transmission in a single, ruggedized platform.

The technology utilizes advanced lens systems to expand, collimate, and refocus light beams, rather than relying on traditional physical contact. This design helps reduce sensitivity to dust and contamination while offering consistent performance in high-vibration and high-interference environments. The use of non-magnetic materials such as aluminum, titanium, and silver makes it particularly suitable for applications in medical imaging systems, such as MRI machines.

According to the company, the patented cable supports over 100,000 mating cycles and is engineered for reliable, low-maintenance performance. It is designed to serve critical sectors including medical, aerospace, defense, and industrial environments where durable, high-speed data transmission is essential.

Jay D. Miller, President and CEO of Nortech Systems, stated that the innovation aligns with the company’s ongoing investment in research and development. “This technology supports industries that require high data integrity and robust durability,” he said.

In addition to technical performance, Nortech emphasized the sustainability benefits of the new platform. The solution’s durability and reduced maintenance requirements contribute to lower environmental impact when compared to conventional copper interconnect systems.

The company also highlighted its approach to global manufacturing, noting that much of its production follows a near-shoring model—building products in-country for local markets. This strategy aims to reduce shipping times and costs while minimizing the effects of tariffs on international operations.

Nortech’s expanded beam cable technology is positioned to support a range of critical use cases, offering flexibility and reliability for customers operating in complex and demanding environments. The company continues to explore further advancements in fiber optic and digital connectivity technologies.
