Boréas Technologies has announced the successful completion of the AEC-Q100 Grade 2 qualification for its BOS1211 piezo haptic driver IC. This certification confirms the BOS1211’s suitability for use in the automotive sector, enabling original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers to integrate advanced tactile feedback into car central displays and steering wheels. The BOS1211 offers a more responsive and customizable touch experience compared to traditional linear resonant actuators (LRAs), which are slower and have a limited frequency range.

The completion of this qualification comes as the automotive industry seeks to enhance the sensitivity and intuitiveness of touch interfaces. As more controls are moved to touchscreens and steering wheels, the risk of distracted driving has become a concern. A 2022 Swedish study indicated that performing tasks on a touchscreen takes significantly longer than using conventional controls, potentially increasing distraction. The BOS1211 aims to mitigate this risk by providing localized, crisp haptic feedback, allowing drivers to maintain focus on the road.

“Piezo haptic buttons in automotive cabins offer drivers both the reassuring tactile feedback of mechanical buttons and the benefits of a more sophisticated user interface,” said Simon Chaput, founder and president of Boréas Technologies. “These buttons are also significantly smaller and more power-efficient than LRAs.”

The BOS1211 utilizes Boréas’ CapDrive® Technology, a patented ultra-low-power architecture, to deliver precise and responsive haptic feedback along with integrated force sensing. This technology supports a wide range of applications, ensuring that touch interactions are quick and accurate, which enhances the overall driving experience and safety.
