In a notable development for India’s semiconductor industry, South Korean company Simmtech has formalized an agreement with the Gujarat Government, outlining plans for a significant investment of over ₹1,250 crore. Simmtech, the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductor substrates, is set to establish a manufacturing plant in Sanand, near Ahmedabad.

The announcement was made by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gandhinagar. According to Minister Vaishnaw, Simmtech has been allocated 30 acres of land in Sanand, and the commencement of the project is slated for the next two to three months.

This investment is part of a broader initiative to develop a robust semiconductor ecosystem within the state. The new plant is expected to support the operations of US chipmaker Micron, which is concurrently establishing its own facility in the region.

Minister Vaishnaw also disclosed that India’s first ‘Make in India’ chip is projected to be manufactured in Sanand by 2024. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of a center of excellence for research and development related to semiconductors at the Indian Institute of Technology-Gandhinagar.

Simmtech’s move is seen as a positive development for India’s semiconductor industry, contributing to the nation’s technological advancements. Minister Vaishnaw underscored the need for a substantial talent pool in the industry over the next decade, expressing confidence in India’s ability to meet this demand.

The collaboration between Simmtech and the Gujarat Government is expected to bring about economic benefits, technological advancements, and job opportunities, further enhancing India’s standing in the global semiconductor landscape.
