SMART Global Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: SGH) has appointed Mary G. Puma as an independent member of its board of directors, effective July 15, 2023. Puma, a distinguished leader in the high technology sector, brings with her a wealth of experience and expertise in guiding innovators in the semiconductor chip manufacturing industry.
Before joining SMART Global Holdings, Mary G. Puma served as the president and CEO of Axcelis Technologies, Inc., a prominent company specializing in capital equipment for the semiconductor chip manufacturing industry, from January 2002 to May 2023. During her tenure, Puma demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and played a pivotal role in steering Axcelis to new heights.
Mark Adams, the company’s executive, expressed excitement about welcoming Mary G. Puma to the board, highlighting her impressive background in the high technology sector and her ability to provide valuable guidance to industry innovators.
Puma’s career at Axcelis began in July 2000 when she assumed the role of President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to her time at Axcelis, she held the position of General Manager and Vice President at the Implant Systems Division of Eaton Corporation, a renowned global industrial manufacturer. Puma originally joined Eaton in 1996 as General Manager of the Commercial Controls Division.
Before her time at Eaton, Puma gained valuable experience in various marketing and general management positions at General Electric, where she spent 15 years.
Beyond her remarkable accomplishments in the industry, Puma has held significant leadership positions, contributing her expertise to various organizations. She has served as the Executive Chairperson of the board at Axcelis since May 2023 and was previously Chairperson of the board from 2005 to 2015. Additionally, Puma is a director of Nordson Corporation and, since December 2022, has been the Chairperson of the board of SEMI, a global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chain for the micro- and nano-electronics industries.
Puma’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Tufts University and a Master of Science degree from the prestigious MIT Sloan School of Management.
