In a significant move aimed at bolstering the ‘Make in India’ initiative, global technology giant Intel has joined forces with eight prominent Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) in India. This collaboration is set to accelerate the production of laptops within the country, aligning with Intel’s comprehensive understanding of the IT industry ecosystem.
The collaboration involves key players such as Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd. For some of these companies, this venture marks their inaugural entry into the laptop manufacturing domain. The partnership emphasizes Intel’s commitment to fostering technology-driven growth in sync with the Make in India initiative, a testament to the company’s dedication to shaping India’s digital landscape.
Under this collaboration, Intel has shared its expertise to facilitate the production of complete entry-level laptops in India. This involved implementing state-of-the-art Surface Mount Technology (SMT) lines, establishing a rigorous quality control process for components, and conducting benchmarking tests for finished products. Intel has extended its support to ODMs, covering both Semi Knocked Down (SKD) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) processes, thereby ensuring a seamless manufacturing workflow.
Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, expressed his satisfaction with Intel’s involvement, aligning it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to propel India’s Digital Economy to $1 Trillion and enable the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26. Chandrasekhar highlighted the importance of deepening India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities and nurturing local companies to become trusted players in the global electronics value chains.
Intel’s Vice President and Managing Director for the India region, Santhosh Viswanathan, emphasized the historic significance of this collaboration. He stated that Intel’s technology-related investments and global system supply chain knowledge would play a pivotal role in fostering electronic manufacturing capabilities within India. By overseeing the entire laptop manufacturing process, from surface mount technology assembly to the finished product, Intel not only supports the Make in India initiative but also contributes significantly to the nation’s technological advancement.
Looking ahead, Intel plans to host the India Tech Ecosystem Summit later this month, providing a platform for numerous local manufacturers to showcase a diverse range of devices made in India. As India’s electronics manufacturing industry stands at a critical juncture, Intel remains committed to facilitating access and opportunities for the technology ecosystem. The company will continue its collaboration with the government, industry stakeholders, and the startup community, aiming to create a meaningful and lasting impact on the country’s technological landscape.
