Air Liquide's 50M Euro Bet on Green Tech for GlobalFoundries

Air Liquide has disclosed an investment exceeding 50 million euros to construct a new plant in Singapore and revamp existing facilities in Malta, New York, geared towards supplying high purity nitrogen to semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries. The investment focuses on enhancing energy efficiencies at GlobalFoundries facilities.

The new plant in Singapore, utilizing Air Liquide’s proprietary state-of-the-art designs, is expected to be operational by 2026, with a key emphasis on reducing electricity consumption. In addition, Air Liquide has extended its partnership with GlobalFoundries to supply high purity gases to its existing units in Malta, New York, for the next 15 years.

These projects are designed to contribute to the reduction of GlobalFoundries’ overall carbon footprint, aligning with Air Liquide’s commitment to providing solutions that address the evolving needs of the semiconductor industry. The collaboration aims to optimize energy efficiency projects at GlobalFoundries’ New York site, supporting sustainability goals over the 15-year partnership duration.

The collaboration is part of the long-lasting partnership between Air Liquide and GlobalFoundries, emphasizing support for the semiconductor company’s growth in major hubs. Armelle Levieux, member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee overseeing Electronics activities, highlighted the strategic nature of the partnership, stating, “To meet the specific needs of our electronics customers, we develop solutions that bring both efficiencies and sustainability benefits.”

Roberto Avallone, Head of Global Facilities and Capacity Planning at GlobalFoundries, emphasized the environmental sustainability aspect, stating, “Our collaboration with Air Liquide is part of our global manufacturing expansion strategy in Singapore, the U.S., and Germany.” Avallone expressed optimism about adopting solutions aligned with GlobalFoundries’ global sustainability strategy.

GlobalFoundries’ sustainability goals, including the Journey to Zero Carbon announced in August 2021, aim to reduce the company’s total greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, despite significant planned growth in global manufacturing capacity.
