ATREG, Inc., a firm specializing in facilitating transactions within the semiconductor industry, has announced the successful completion of the sale of Japan Display, Inc. (JDI)’s operational LCD panel manufacturing fab in Higashiura, Japan, to Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (SCK).
The sale, officially concluded recently, represents a significant milestone in the semiconductor sector. In May 2022, JDI had disclosed plans to cease production at the Higashiura fab by March 2023 to enhance cost competitiveness and profitability. As part of the transition, JDI intends to repurpose a portion of the facility into an engineering center.
Yasushi Shimogaichi, Chief Strategy Officer for JDI, expressed satisfaction with the outcome facilitated by ATREG, stating, “Our collaboration with ATREG has enabled us to identify the optimal solution for the Higashiura facility. This acquisition ensures job preservation and fosters ongoing engineering innovation at the site.”
Stephen Rothrock, President and CEO of ATREG, emphasized the firm’s role in navigating the complex sale process. “Despite challenges such as the facility’s size and the tight timeline, ATREG successfully engaged multiple interested parties and facilitated a competitive selection process, enabling JDI to choose the most suitable buyer for this well-equipped, infrastructure-rich facility,” Rothrock remarked.
The completion of the sale signifies a strategic move for both JDI and Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, positioning them to capitalize on opportunities within the semiconductor industry. The transition also underscores ATREG’s commitment to facilitating mutually beneficial transactions within the global semiconductor market.
