Morse Micro Achieves World’s Longest Range Wi-Fi HaLow – 3 Kilometers in Live Field Test

Wi-Fi HaLow silicon

Morse Micro, a prominent Wi-Fi HaLow silicon vendor, has successfully demonstrated the world’s longest-range Wi-Fi HaLow technology, covering an impressive three kilometers (nearly two miles). The breakthrough, showcased through a long-range video call in San Francisco’s Ocean Beach neighborhood, highlights the capabilities of Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow system-on-chip (SoC) solution in real-world scenarios.

Wi-Fi HaLow, based on the IEEE 802.11ah standard, introduces a low-power, long-reach version of Wi-Fi with over 10 times the range, 100 times the coverage area, and 1000 times the volume of traditional Wi-Fi technologies. Morse Micro’s demonstration exemplifies the technology’s efficacy in overcoming challenges associated with long-distance connectivity, particularly in urban environments.

The unprecedented 3 km range achieved in the field test is attributed to Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow SoC solution. Operating in the sub-GHz spectrum on narrow frequency bands, Wi-Fi HaLow can penetrate obstacles and deliver reliable performance even in crowded environments with numerous connected devices. Additionally, Wi-Fi HaLow extends wireless range while optimizing battery life through power-saving features.

Michael De Nil, co-founder and CEO of Morse Micro, acknowledged the significance of this achievement, stating, “Our successful demo of Wi-Fi HaLow video call across three kilometers in a difficult, real-world urban environment is a major milestone for Wi-Fi connectivity, showcasing the wireless protocol’s incredible reach.” De Nil emphasized that Wi-Fi HaLow is a transformative technology, breaking the boundaries of traditional wireless connectivity and establishing itself as a frontrunner in the IoT landscape.

Traditionally, Wi-Fi protocols have been fundamental to wireless connectivity, but the rapid growth of IoT applications exposed limitations in range and power efficiency. Morse Micro, recognizing this challenge in 2016, developed Wi-Fi HaLow to bridge technological gaps. The momentum behind Wi-Fi HaLow is rapidly growing, with the Wi-Fi Alliance actively promoting its connectivity benefits and extending the range of existing Wi-Fi standards.

Morse Micro, leading in Wi-Fi HaLow technology development, is currently sampling its Wi-Fi Alliance and FCC-certified MM6108 production silicon. This SoC is regarded as the fastest, smallest, lowest power, and longest-range Wi-Fi HaLow SoC available in the market. The company has built an extensive ecosystem of module partners and ODMs, gaining traction in infrastructure applications and IoT devices. These include indoor and outdoor IP security cameras, dual-mode Wi-Fi access points, and various IoT products showcased at partner demos during CES 2024.
