The robotics and automation industry in Germany is gearing up for a remarkable achievement as it projects a substantial increase in sales in 2023. Industry experts anticipate a growth rate of 13 percent, resulting in sales reaching a record-breaking 16.2 billion euros. This positive trajectory follows a 5 percent sales growth in 2022, where the industry generated 14.3 billion euros.
Chairman of VDMA Robotics + Automation, Frank Konrad, expressed his optimism, stating, “The robotics and automation industry is on course for growth.” Konrad highlighted the market’s current dynamics, with full order books and an alleviation of supply chain challenges. As the industry works through the backlog accumulated during the pandemic, it is gradually leaving the challenging period behind.
Several sub-sectors within the robotics and automation industry displayed encouraging performance in 2022. The industrial image processing division witnessed an impressive 11 percent increase, with sales reaching 3.4 billion euros. Integrated Assembly Solutions experienced a 5 percent sales growth, reaching 7.4 billion euros. Robotics sales also showed a modest 1 percent rise, amounting to 3.5 billion euros.
Looking ahead to 2023, the industry forecasts further growth in these sub-sectors. Industrial image processing is expected to achieve a 7 percent increase, with projected sales of 3.6 billion euros. Integrated Assembly Solutions anticipates a significant sales boost of 17 percent, reaching 8.7 billion euros. Robotics, in particular, is poised for a 12 percent growth, with projected sales of 3.9 billion euros.
The rise of robotics and automation is not limited to Germany. Globally, the installation of industrial robots has witnessed exponential growth. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), approximately half a million industrial robots were installed worldwide in 2022, double the number from seven years ago. China has emerged as a global leader, surpassing the United States in robot density within the manufacturing industry. China is predicted to surpass Germany in robot density by 2023.
In response to the intense international competition, Frank Konrad welcomed the initiative of the Federal Chancellor’s Future Council to strengthen robotics and automation in Germany. As the demand for automation continues to escalate, the service sector stands to benefit significantly, particularly in maintaining productivity amid labor shortages.
Automation plays a crucial role in various industries, driven by transformational trends. The automotive industry is actively developing new manufacturing techniques for electric cars, while the expansion of renewable energies necessitates cost-effective and highly automated mass production of green tech products, such as fuel cells. Across all sectors, the focus is on sustainable business practices, competitive production in Europe, and compensating for the scarcity of skilled workers.
The projected growth in the German robotics and automation industry positions it for a prosperous future. By leveraging advancements in technology and innovation, Germany is poised to maintain its position as a leader in the global robotics landscape.
